What We Do
TDCJ-CJAD administers community supervision (adult probation) in Texas. The 71st Texas Legislature changed the term adult probation to community supervision in 1993. Offenders on community supervision serve their sentences in the community rather than in prison. Almost 375,000 offenders are on community supervision in Texas.
TDCJ-CJAD does not work directly with offenders, but with the community supervision and corrections departments (CSCDs) that supervise the offenders. The division’s work includes:
- Tracking the performance of CSCDs
- Monitoring and reviewing CSCD budgets and programs
- Distributing state funding to the departments
- Enforcing TDCJ-CJAD Standards for CSCDs
- Providing CSCDs with administrative and technical help
- Training community supervision officers CS Training Calendar
TDCJ-CJAD has four sections and multiple sub-sections. The division director seeks advice from a 12-member council of judges and citizens, known as the Judicial Advisory Council (JAC). Any standards, rules, or guidelines the division proposes must be approved by the Texas Board of Criminal Justice (TBCJ) before they can be adopted.
