Population Types

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice is responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of several populations across the state.

Incarcerated Individuals in State Prisons

TDCJ’s Correctional Institutions Division (CID) supervises people who have been sentenced to serve time for state felonies in the TDCJ. This includes individuals assigned to specialized therapeutic facilities, including Substance Abuse Felony Punishment Facilities (SAFPF), Intermediate Sanction Facilities (ISF) and In‑prison therapeutic community programs.

Overall, there are 104 correctional facilities across the State of Texas.

Individuals on Parole Supervision

The Parole Division supervises individuals released from prison who are serving the remainder of their sentence in their community. Their conditions are set by the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles.

Individuals on Community Supervision

Individuals who serve their sentences in their community, rather than in prison, are considered on community supervision, formerly known as probation. These individuals are supervised by the adult probation departments at the county level. The Community Justice Assistance Division provides oversight, funding, and standards for these departments.
