Additional Information

Single transaction deposits of $500 or more as well as insurance, company, payroll, estate checks, and other like disbursements are held 14 days before inmate access is authorized.

Do not send trust fund deposits to inmate's facility of assignment and do not send inmate's personal mail or other items to the Inmate Trust Fund.

Inmate Trust Fund staff can respond to inquiries concerning the receipt of a deposit but cannot release information regarding the inmate's account activity or balance to anyone except the inmate. Inmates receive monthly statements listing all trust fund account transactions for that period including deposit sendee and authorized payments/withdrawals.

Inmate Trust Fund does not pay interest; therefore, the account should hold no more than what is required to meet the inmate's immediate needs. Inmates may use funds in their trust fund accounts to make purchases from the facility commissary or through approved vendors. They may also send funds to family or friends. Any balance in an inmate's Trust Fund account is provided to the inmate upon his/her release.

Inmate Commissary

Commissaries are located at each unit and provide inmates with a convenient method to purchase items not furnished to them by the agency. Eligible inmates can use money in their trust fund to purchase items available at the unit commissary. There are over 700 individual items available including snacks, nutritional supplements, personal hygiene, educational supplies, entertainment, and clothing.

How long will it take for an inmate to receive the items purchased online?

Items will be delivered within approximately five business days after TDJ receives the order. Please note that unit security or staffing can override this timeframe. At this time, there is not an e-mail confirmation that the items purchased were delivered. You may contact the inmate to verify they received their items or contact eCommDirect department at (936) 437-8990 or e-mail ecommdirect@tdcj.texas.gov after five business days.

What criteria are used to determine an inmate’s eligibility to receive purchases? How does an inmate verify eligibility to receive purchases from eComm Direct?

Inmates eligibility is based on:

  • The inmate's custody level (General Population and State Jail Levels 4 and 5, Administrative Segregation levels 2, 3 and transition, Death Row levels 2 and 3 and certain medical conditions are not eligible.)
  • The inmate must not be on commissary restriction. (Inmates on commissary restriction are not eligible.)
  • If the inmate is newly received, the inmate will not be eligible until the next calendar quarter after the inmate's entry.
  • Whether or not the inmate is housed at a location that has a TDCJ commissary located on the unit.
  • Inmates cannot receive purchases while the unit is on lockdown.
  • Inmates may submit an I-60 to determine their eligibility status for eCommDirect.

Will the eCommDirect purchase amount limit the amount an inmate is eligible to spend in the commissary?

No, the eCommDirect purchase is in addition to an inmate’s spend limit in commissary.

Is the spend limit per purchase or per quarter?

The maximum spend limit for an eligible inmate is per quarter. Multiple purchases may be made throughout the quarter, but there will be a $3.75 fee assessed for each transaction.

  • January – March up to $70;
  • April – June up to $70;
  • July – September up to $70; and
  • October – December up to $95 (Holiday Spend)

How do I become approved to make purchases?

The inmate will need to add you to their approved visitation list or approved telephone list.

Why is an item not available from eCommDirect or unit commissary?

Fluctuations in inventory can cause the top selling items to be unavailable at times, however, this is not an indication of statewide product shortage. Product availability is monitored daily.

*Items that are not available for purchase from eCommDirect include stamps, property, clothing, and medication items.

Are products available on the eCommDirect website a reflection of the items available at unit commissary?

No, unit commissaries have over 700 items, where eCommDIrect has up to 100 top selling items depending on inventory levels. The products shown on the website are a portion of all TDCJ units inventory items within the State of Texas. If a certain number of unit commissaries are out of a product, those products will be removed from eCommDirect to reduce products substitution.

May I place an order over the phone?

No, orders are only placed through the eCommDirect website.

Will I be charged a fee for making a purchase or deposit?

Yes, the fee to make a purchase is $3.75 and the fee to make a deposit is $2.50 plus 2.25% of the deposit. The fee to make a deposit and purchase at the same time is $3.75 plus 2.25% of the deposit.

Why does the system time me out?

There is a 30-minute time limit on this website. Once you have been timed out of the store, you will not be able to go back in and make a purchase until the next business day.

When I am shopping and hit the “back” button, why am I locked out of the system?

Due to security, the system will block you from returning to the website until the next day.

Can I make a purchase using any online package program?

No, eCommDirect is the only acceptable package program for TDCJ inmates.

What are the cost of items available at a unit’s commissary?

The TDCJ Commissary Price List (PDF) is updated monthly. Some items are not available at every commissary location.
