Texas Board of Criminal Justice Appoints New Chief Audit Executive

February 25, 2026

The Texas Board of Criminal Justice (TBCJ) appointed Renee Russell as the Chief Audit Executive during the last board meeting held on February 20. Russell will assume the position on March 1.

The Chief Audit Executive leads the Office of the Independent Auditor, which provides independent analyses, appraisals and recommendations regarding the effectiveness of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ). The position reports directly to the TBCJ.

Russell has more than two decades of experience in corrections, including eight years as Deputy Chief Audit Executive for the Office of the Independent Auditor. She began her career in a TDCJ mailroom and held several positions across the agency before joining the Office of the Independent Auditor as an entry-level auditor. She advanced through the ranks of the office, ultimately serving as Deputy Chief Audit Executive beginning in August 2018.

“During her tenure with the Office of Independent Auditor, Renee has demonstrated exceptional leadership, professionalism and the utmost commitment to integrity,” TBCJ Chairman Eric J.R. Nichols said. “I am confident she will continue to elevate the office and provide key independent assurance and advisory services to the board.”

Russell holds a bachelor’s degree from Sam Houston State University, and is a Certified Internal Auditor and a Certified Government Auditing Professional.

“I am honored to continue serving the board and the Office of the Independent Auditor in this new capacity,” Russell said. “I look forward to continue strengthening the collaborative relationships with the agency.”
