Office of the Inspector General
Who We Are
The Texas Board of Criminal Justice (TBCJ) created the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) to serve as the primary law enforcement and investigative entity of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ). The OIG is an independent office that reports to the TBCJ, with the Inspector General reporting directly to the TBCJ chairman.
The OIG investigators are certified peace officers, as authorized by Texas Code of Criminal Procedures, Article 2.12 and licensed by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
Mission Statement
The OIG investigates allegations of criminal activity and misconduct that impact TDCJ programs, personnel, and resources, including waste, fraud, and abuse.
The OIG furthers its law enforcement efforts through task force partnerships with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, and the United States Marshals Service. These partnerships bind a commitment of sharing information and reinforce a law enforcement allegiance when dealing with escapees, fugitives, parolees, and organized prison gangs.
Philosophy
The OIG is responsive to the needs of the TBCJ, the TDCJ, governmental agencies, and the people of Texas by demonstrating a willingness and ability to impartially investigate administrative and criminal complaints, while protecting the rights of all persons involved. The OIG, will at all times, be truthful, ethical, and accountable, emphasizing effective communications, timeliness of investigations and teamwork.
Integrity
The OIG management demands excellence in the quality of its investigations, stressing independence, professionalism, and honor. The OIG performs its fundamental duties with fairness, compassion, and respect, while seeking justice through the unyielding pursuit to identify, apprehend, and prosecute transgressors, and ensuring the Constitutional Rights of all people.
Values
Our work is fact-based, objective, and supported by sufficient, appropriate evidence in accordance with professional standards.
Teamwork
Members of the OIG serve with honor, treat each other with dignity and respect, and recognize the importance of each individual's role in the organization. Our success depends on working together and fostering an inclusive and mutually supportive environment. Our work environment encourages collaboration, innovation, flexibility, and integration of OIG resources.
