“Supervisor of the Year Award” Recipient

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) and One Voice United National Medal of Honor are proud to announce the selection of Major Micah Sims from the A.M. Stringfellow Unit as the recipient of the prestigious “Supervisor of the Year Award”. This award recognizes individuals who demonstrate exceptional dedication and commitment to public safety within the field of corrections. The honorees were nominated by their peers and superiors and chosen among hundreds.

With over 15 years of service at TDCJ, Major Sims embarked on his career at the Darrington Unit, initially serving as a Food Service Manager II before being promoted to Food Service Captain in May 2016. In September 2022, he further advanced to the position of Major at the Stringfellow Unit.

“To compete for such a prestigious national award and win has been an amazing and truly humbling experience,” Sims said. “I am in awe of the title ‘Supervisor of the Year’. My role as the Stringfellow Unit’s Major of Food Service could not be possible without creativity, a hard-working department, and a culinary restaurant model approach.”

Major Sims and a guest will be flown to Chicago, Illinois, to attend the awards ceremony and banquet in April. In addition to the recognition at the ceremony, Major Sims will also receive a well-deserved award and a plaque for his facility. This recognition not only highlights Major Sims’ exceptional contributions but also reflects the commitment of TDCJ to promote excellence within the field of corrections.

“I would like to congratulate Major Sims for his accolades and accomplishments. I am honored to be able to work with Major Sims because he not only gives his staff direction to be better, but he also gives the inmates opportunities to be better,” Warden Carl Burson said. “He goes above and beyond to ensure that his staff follow the core values set by TDCJ so that all his officers feel value towards the work being accomplished.”

In addition, Major Sims’ colleague, Food Service Manager Domonic Bias, said she would not be where she is today without the encouragement, faith, and trust that Major Sims shows toward her to be able to follow his methods and continue his path to making their department the best it can be each day.

TDCJ and One Voice United National Medal of Honor program extend their heartfelt congratulations to Major Micah Sims for his outstanding achievement. His dedication and commitment to public safety serve as an inspiration to all within the field of corrections.

“The National Medal of Honor is just one way to let staff know they are being recognized, they are being seen and that their efforts and sacrifices are appreciated,” One Voice United said, “It also provides a tool to help change the narrative about corrections by showcasing the incredible acts of bravery and selflessness we see daily from correctional staff.”
