Pay Increase for Maximum Security Unit Employees

Beginning September 1, 2021, Correctional Officers, Food Service and Laundry Managers, and ranking Correction Officers at 23 maximum security TDCJ units will begin receiving a 3% pay increase approved by the state legislature. The Texas Board of Criminal Justice also approved this consent item at its most recent meeting. This change will allow Correctional Officers to move rapidly through the employment ladder to levels of increasing responsibility.

The units include Allred, Beto, Clements, Coffield, Connally, Ellis, Estelle, Ferguson, Hughes, Lewis, McConnell, Memorial, Michael, Montford, Polunsky, Robertson, Scott, Skyview, Smith, Stiles, Telford, Wainwright, Wynne.

This change acknowledges employees working in maximum security units around the state and will be a part of the TDCJ Correctional Officer recruitment effort. In addition, because of input from the Executive Directors Retention Task Force Captains, the agency is adjusting the Correctional Officer career ladder to create pay increases upon academy graduation, at six months of service, at the one-year mark, and at the two-year mark for all Correctional Officers.

“Service with the TDCJ should be rewarding and we believe these changes help show that,” says TDCJ Executive Director Bryan Collier. “From the day our Officers begin the academy they become a part of the TDCJ family. The TDCJ thanks the Texas Legislature for recognizing the valuable and difficult work performed by correctional staff.”
