November 4, 2024
French M. Robertson Unit
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) is proud to announce that Senior Warden Jennifer Cozby of the French M. Robertson Unit has been selected as the 2024 Warden of the Year.
Each year, regional directors nominate wardens who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, mentorship, vision, and statistical performance. The nominations undergo a rigorous review process by the Correctional Institutions Division (CID) deputy division directors and the CID director for final approval.
According to Jerry Sanchez, Region VI director, Cozby’s leadership skills and innovative thinking have changed the Robertson Unit.
“Jennifer’s innovative approach and tireless work ethic have significantly improved our correctional environment. She has inspired staff and offered hope and opportunities to inmates,” Sanchez said. “Her strong moral compass and genuine concern for both staff and inmates has created a culture of trust, respect, and accountability.”
Executive Director Bryan Collier added, "In the demanding and challenging world of corrections, outstanding leadership, dedication, and compassion are essential qualities for success. I am proud to recognize Jennifer Cozby for her commitment to excellence.”

Cozby is a 28-year veteran with the agency. She began her career in September 1995 as a correctional officer and was promoted through the ranks by serving the agency as a sergeant, lieutenant, captain, major, assistant warden, and senior warden. Warden Cozby has served at Beto, Robertson, Clements, Daniel, Allred, Rudd, Jordan/Baten, Smith, Halbert, Woodman, Murray, and the Hobby/Marlin Complex units.
In June 2021 she was appointed to senior warden at the French M. Robertson Unit in Abilene, Texas. As the senior warden, Cozby is responsible for the unit's overall operations and culture.
“I was initially surprised upon receiving this prestigious award, but it took a few days to sink in. This award is a testament to hard work, dedication, and a feeling of pride. However, the staff at the Robertson Unit truly earned this award for their efforts in changing the culture along with the population and family support. I am just a weathervane; they are the ones that make the wind blow,” Cozby said. “This role as a 'weathervane' is a constant reminder of the importance of recognizing and valuing the contributions of others. I am proud to work beside the staff and be a part of the Robertson Unit family. I give special thanks to my family, our agency leadership, Mr. Jerry Sanchez, my mentors, and most of all, the staff at the Robertson Unit. Your support and dedication have been invaluable, and I am deeply grateful.”
