by Edinburgh Police Department
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice K-9 unit from the Segovia Unit in Edinburg was recognized by the Edinburgh Police Department on Wednesday for their assistance in solving an attempted murder case a little over a year ago.
On April 10, 2014 an Edinburgh police officer responded to a 9-1-1 hang up call on South 20th Avenue. When he arrived at the residence, the officer was shot by an unknown suspect who then fled from the residence.
The next morning Edinburg police requested the assistance of the Segovia Unit K-9 team to locate the suspect. Segovia Unit Assistant Warden Terry May and Correctional Officer Don McAnear along with "Rita" located in a very short time the suspect's weapon and traces of blood about 300 feet from the house in an alley.
This evidence assisted investigators in locating 9 suspects who were involved in the incident and being charged with Attempted Murder. The officer who was shot recovered from his wound and has returned to work.
Edinburg Chief of Police Rolando Castaneda praised the work of the TDCJ K-9 officers in helping solve the case and giving investigators the evidence needed to convict all 9 suspects.
