Contraband - Any object, substance, or material forbidden by unit or Correctional Institutions Divisions rules or state law from being in an offender's possession or control or in a prison unit or facility. In relation to correspondence, any physical item that presents a threat to the safety or security of the satff, offenders, institution, or public, and does not include any written material disapproved for its content.

Dangerous contraband is anything that can be used as a weapon or to aid in an escape. Examples include guns or gun parts, explosives, magnets, knives, wire, torches, tools, chemicals, razor blades, alcohol, matches, and lighters.

Non-dangerous contraband is any item that has been altered, damaged, in excess of authorized amounts, out of place, can cause clutter, create fire or hygiene hazards, make maintenance and cell searches difficult, or can be used to hide plans for an escape. Examples include gum, cigarettes, games, food, clothing, property, paper, and garbage.

Documentary contraband is documents not received through authorized channels to include legal materials. Examples include newspapers, magazines, letters, and religious tracts.
