2011 Governor’s Criminal Justice Volunteer Service Awards
Judy Burd Award - Windham School District
To help offenders and their children reconnect, Judith Dullnig created the Women’s Storybook Project of Texas. Starting at one facility in 2003, the Women’s Storybook Project now operates on six female prison facilities, helping incarcerated mothers connect with their children through reading. The mother reads a storybook as though they are reading to their children, and it is recorded. The recording, along with the book, are then sent to the mother’s children. For her continued efforts and dedication in restoring the relationships between an offender parent and their children through reading, Windham School District has selected Judith Dullnig to receive the honorable Judy Burd volunteer award. The Women’s Storybook Project of Texas was also recognized for its volunteer service in 2010 as the recipient of the Susan Cranford Award for female offender program.
This award is named in tribute to curriculum specialist, Judy Burd, who was employed with the Windham School District where she developed the nationally recognized pre-release program CHANGES. She was also the WSD Volunteer Program Coordinator and, in that capacity, encouraged many to give of their time in service to others. Judy Burd was well qualified for this role as she volunteered at the local alternative education program, and for several years taught adult education at night in her community, helping many learn to read and write.
