2011 Governor’s Criminal Justice Volunteer Service Awards
As a former correctional and parole officer, Donna Haggard has a special understanding of the lives, needs, and circumstances of offenders. Her goal is the successful re-integration of offenders to become productive citizens within our communities. To meet this goal, Ms. Haggard teaches two classes, an anger management class and a class on cognitive intervention to ex-offenders. She also donates her time and personal finances to fund the curriculum costs and graduation expenses, to include a meaningful gift for each graduate to recognize their success. In the spring of 2010, the parole office experienced a fire that suspended some services. Ms. Haggard, however, volunteered to continue to teach her two classes although she assumed additional duties as a result of the fire. Currently, Ms. Haggard is a full-time student pursuing a masters degree in sociology. Because of her dedicated efforts in helping others, Donna Haggard has been selected to receive the volunteer award for Restorative Justice. This is the second time Ms. Haggard has been recognized for her dedicated volunteer service; in 2009 she was the Carol S. Vance Volunteer of the Year.
