Happy National Hire a Veteran Day!

We value what veterans have done to protect our freedom and our country. As an agency, we are honored to hire the former men and women of the military. Navy veteran and current Correctional Officer Ed Marrero is one of those veterans, who has served in both capacities at the same place!

Stationed at Naval Air Station Chase Field in Beeville as a diesel mechanic, Ed was looking for a new gig after completing his stint in the Navy.

As fate would have it, one short year later he was transferred to the Garza West Transfer Facility, which was located at the same Chase Field Complex at which he had served with the Navy. TDCJ had redeveloped it and put it into use!

“It was very weird to come back to work in the very same place where I retired a few years before,” says Marerro. “A lot of the old buildings in the base that use to be used by the sailors like the commissary, base clubs, and living quarters are now being used for offender dorms.”

Now, 27 years later, he still leads with the same discipline he learned with his time in the Navy, and it’s served him very well!

“Being a veteran is unique. Your coworkers look up to you and really respect you for being a veteran. They appreciate what we did serving our country in the military I like that a lot.”

We are definitely glad to have Ed aboard, and are forever grateful for his service. If you’re a veteran, we’d love to have you join our team! If you’re interested, apply at
