In July, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice held a ceremony to mark the completion of a brand-new interfaith chapel at the Torres Unit in Hondo.

After nearly two decades of discussion, planning and construction, offender-congregants, TDCJ staff and supporters from the faith community attended the new chapel’s dedication service, which included musical performances and presentations from faith leaders and senior agency staff.

The new chapel will increase the opportunities for incarcerated offenders to take part in the religious programs of their choice and allow the agency’s Rehabilitation Program Division to provide more rehabilitation services. Faith programs provide critical support and guidance as offenders work to improve their lives and help to ensure security by improving offender compliance.
